Everyone’s heard of Halloween! It’s all about pumpkins, bats and people dressed up in scary costumes. Traditionally an all-American celebration that has gradually made its way from the movie screen and found a place on our list of autumn celebrations. However, we must not forget the origins of this celebration. Traditionally, it is the time when we remember our deceased ancestors, and a night when the worlds of the living and dead come together.

The celebrations vary considerably depending on where you are. On Mallorca, for instance, we celebrate the Feast of All Saints on 1st November. It is a public holiday and a day when families get together to visit the cemetery and leave flowers on the tombs of their loved ones. Nostalgia hangs heavily in the air and people throng the flower-filled cemeteries. No-one dresses up and the traditional delicacies are somewhat different: we swap the pumpkins and candy apples for crystallised fruit rosaries and marzipan sweets known as panellets.

The crystallised rosaries are made from candied fruits – mainly cherries, plums and pumpkins. They are boiled in sugar and water several times and left to cool, before being strung like a necklace. The pieces of fruit normally feature religious images.

Panellets are small sweets made from almond, sugar and egg, and are traditionally coated in pine nuts. Nowadays however they come in a wide range of flavours, although chocolate, coconut and lemon are the most popular. Even though panellets are traditionally a Catalonian delicacy, today they can be found in any cake shop on Mallorca.
