Discover the beauty of almond blossom in Majorca
Around the start of the year our island changes its colour, and its fields take on hues of white and pink. But contrary to what you might think, it isn’t snow! It’s the almond blossom in Majorca.
But when is the almond blossom season in Majorca exactly? Every year, depending on the weather, almond blossom begins to appear around late January, and the spectacular floral display continues throughout February.
Majorca in February, with the almond trees in bloom, undergoes a transformation that attracts thousands of nature lovers, and pulls attention away from the coast, directing it inland.
If you look closely, you’ll notice trees with pink flowers and others with white flowers. This is because there are two varieties of almond tree. The ones with pink flowers produce bitter almonds, while the white flowered almond trees yield sweet fruit.
Temperatures are relatively low during almond blossom season in Majorca, although the sun shines almost every day. The biggest enemy of the flowers is the possible night-time frost, which can cause the death of millions of flowers and the consequent loss of much of the year’s production.
Thousands of almond trees may be seen scattered about the island throughout the season, but the most spectacular areas for enjoying this natural phenomenon are the northern, central and eastern parts of the island, in places like Santa Maria, Llucmajor, Sencelles, Sant Llorenç and Son Servera.
The Serra de Tramuntana, located to the north of the island, is home to some of the most popular cycling routes and a magnet for cyclists from all over the world. During this time of year, the almond blossom adds to the natural beauty of the area, creating a truly magical landscape.
